The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Soaring® Tree Top Adventures

Q: Is it true that Soaring® is only accessible by train?

Yes. We are very remotely located, which is why we have such beautiful, pristine old-growth forests. And, by taking the train to Soaring®, you get two adventures all in one day!

the durango and silverton narrow gauge railroad train arriving at Soaring Tree Top ToursQ: Where are you located?

We are located 32 miles north of downtown Durango, and six miles north by rail from the village of Rockwood, about half way between Durango & Silverton on the train.

Q: I really can’t drive there?

Really! The closest you can park is the village of Rockwood, which is 26 miles north of downtown Durango. From there you need to take the train.

Q: Can I take the train from Durango or Rockwood?

Yes, you can take the train from either Durango or Rockwood. Those staying downtown should take the train from the station in Durango, where those staying north of town may prefer Rockwood. If you would prefer a shorter train ride (40 minutes) with the best views of the Animas River high-line canyon, Soaring® recommends Rockwood for your boarding point. Either way, you get the best of the best part of the trip: the scenic highline canyon of the Animas River, famous from many movies such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, many John Wayne movies, and most recently (2005), a quick segment in The Prestige.

Q: Are there any other ways to get to Soaring®?

Yes. You can take a helicopter to get to Soaring®. New Air Helicopters is located in downtown Durango at Animas Air Park. For details and reservations, please call Soaring®. Pricing runs about $980/hour.

Q: Should we make our own train reservations?

Soaring® will make your train reservations for you, so that it coincides with your Soaring® date. One-stop shopping!

Q: How long is the train ride to Soaring®?

The train ride from Durango to Soaring is about 2 hours, which is half-way to Silverton. If you board the train at Rockwood (recommended), your train ride is 40 minutes.

Q: I have friends who will be traveling to Silverton and are not participating in Soaring®. How do we make our train tickets? Can we sit together?

Easy! Call us, and we'll make your Soaring® reservations and your First Class train car reservations in Soaring's luxury train cars for you and your friends going to Silverton.  You can also book both of these options online under our Reservations tab.

Q: What if I want to upgrade to a first class car on the train?

Soaring® has added their private First Class Train cars, the Tall Timber Legend and Tall Timber Legacy, to provide a high-end experience to our guests to and from their day at Soaring!® Soaring® guests will check in with a Soaring® representative at their pre-arranged boarding point (Durango or Rockwood). Guests may sit where they like in the open seating cars. And, unlike most First Class car options, the Tall Timber Legend and Tall Timber Legacy cars are open to all ages.
